Welcome! My name is Britta Hanson and I am a clinical herbalist practicing in Oakland, California. I believe that plants are powerful teachers and healers, and I am passionate about facilitating relationships between plants and people. I love to learn about the ways in which our bodies move in and out of balance and build sustainable approaches to navigate towards wellbeing, however that looks for each individual. I emphasize education and curiosity throughout my sessions so that my clients leave with tools to listen to and understand the signals of their bodies. Healing is deeply personal, and identifying helpful herbs and strategies is only the first step. Implementing and maintaining practices long term is essential, and I want to ensure that my clients feel set up for success within the practical and logistical challenges of caring for oneself.
I have a particular interest in working with clients experiencing nervous system dysregulation, digestive distress, immune system dysfunction, and chronic illness.

Tending Terrain: My Herbalism Philosophy
Why is my business named Tending Terrain? It encapsulates my philosophy on addressing individual health from a whole systems approach. Terrain is a piece of land identified by its combination of physical features including hills, canyons, plains, rivers, etc. The vitality of these features determine the health of the terrain, and it is likely that the failing of one feature will impact the others, or becomes evidence of a greater ecosystem threat. I see a person as a singular terrain, made up of many components that are working together as best they can. My job is to identify the imbalances and threats causing harm, and understand how seemingly unrelated symptoms might be telling the same story. Every person I support is going to come to me with a different health history and a unique combination of diagnoses. While I can’t expect to know extensive details on each condition of every client I work with, I can always ask questions and gather information to understand what kind of support each person requires. I have a base understanding of anatomy and physiology that I am always building on, which I combine with my knowledge of medicinal herbs and nutrition to form my recommendations. No matter how complicated or nuanced an individual's needs are, we can always support the foundational features of their terrain.
